Jennifer Hudson Cast as Winnie Mandela
Oscar winning actress, Jennifer Hudson has been cast in the biopic Winnie, where she will play Winnie Mandela, Nelson Mandela’s former wife.
The film is set to begin production in May 2010 in South Africa and will be directed by Darrell J. Roodt.
Clint Eastwood is directing another film, Invictus, which is centered around Nelson Mandela and will be played by Morgan Freeman.
Winnie will be based more on Winnie Mandela’s life, being an activist to her husband, fighting against apartheid and being convicted of fraud.
On why she took the role, Hudson said:
“I was compelled and moved when I read the script. Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I’m honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”
