Weinstein Decreases Theater Count for ‘Nine’
It might have gotten five Golden Globe nominations and some good reviews, but Nine is not doing great at the box-office.
The film opened to 1,400 screens last weekend and finished at eighth place with only $5.5 million in ticket sales.
The film’s distributor, the Weinstein Company, is reducing the film’s showings to 800-900 theaters in the coming weeks.
The film, which was one of the most anticipated movies of the year and cost an estimated $64 million to make, stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Judi Dench, Fergie, Kate Hudson and Nicole Kidman.
Nine opened in limited U.S. release on December 18 and expanded widely on December 25.
Have YOU seen Nine?
Update: The studio is now saying that they have no plans of pulling the movie from any theaters after disappointing box office.
David Glasser, an operations executive for the company, who initially was the one that said that the movie was performing well on only 870 key screens and expected that Nine would not perform well in the weeks ahead, is now saying:
“At this moment in time there has been no plan between us nor the theater chains that we deal with to cut any theaters.”
