Celebrities Get Paid to Tweet

kim-kardashianYes it’s true!

You may be following celebrities on Twitter and reading what they write, but Kim Kardashian, Nicole Richie and Lauren Conrad are among the long list of celebrities that are paid to tweet for companies, which include Sony and Nestle.

According to Ad.ly, a company who connects tweeters – both famous and not – with ad partners, Kardashian and Soulja Boy both earn $10,000 whenever they tweet for cash via Ad.ly.

Kardashian, who recently tweeted for Nestle, denied claims that she gets paid to tweet.

Over the weekend, the reality star wrote on her blog:

“Am I not allowed to talk about something I like without people assuming I must have been paid to do it? I want my fans to know what products, gadgets, foods, clothes and beauty products I like and I love sharing all that with my fans.”

Celebrities like Heroes star Greg Grunberg and Channing Tatum, however, donate their tweets to charity. Unlike Kardashian, they earn an estimated four figures per tweet.

Sean Rad, CEO of Ad.ly, says that the company’s “holy grail” of paid tweeters would be Britney Spears or P. Diddy, who can earn up to $20,000 per tweet.

By law, a star would have to say whether they are tweeting for money or not.

According to E! Online:

“A new regulation requires people to disclose whether a blog post or social media post was influenced by any kind of cash incentive—violators could face fines up to $11,000. Tweets arranged through Ad.ly all include language indicating that the communication is an ad, as when Kim recently posted “U guys have to watch Dancing w Stars. But if a star goes through some other medium, or simply tweets for cash on her own, and fails to disclose that, you just might see a nice juicy scandal in 2010 involving the Federal Trade Commission.”
